How much does it cost?
It depends on which service you need. For a single service like editing or proofreading, the cost may be a few hundred dollars. If you need a book written from scratch, it will likely be a few thousand. Here is how we price our services:
It depends on which service you need. For a single service like editing or proofreading, the cost may be a few hundred dollars. If you need a book written from scratch, it will likely be a few thousand. Here is how we price our services:
Finished Manuscripts = Price Based on Existing Word Count
For book checkups, editing, proofreading, and other services that involve a finished manuscript, we base the price on the existing word count of the book. |
Unfinished or Nonexistent Manuscripts = Price Based on Projected Word Count
For writing, interview-to-book services, unfinished manuscripts, and other projects that involve new writing, we base the price on a projected word count. We include a sliding scale in the contract so if the estimate is wrong, the price adjusts accordingly. This sliding scale is the fairest way to price a yet-to-be-written book. If the actual word count is less than the estimated word count, your price goes down; if the actual word count is more than the estimated word count, we only raise the price if you agree that the extra content is vital. You can always request that we shorten the book to keep the price stable. |
How do I pay?
Payments for larger projects are distributed in milestones. You pay a deposit right after you sign the contract. The next payment comes after the next milestone (for example, the consultation after a book checkup).
Do I have full rights to my book?
Yes. Once you've paid the full amount, you own the book.
How long does it take?
It depends on the scope of the project. Proofreading takes about a week for most books, while ghostwriting can take several months. The main factor is project length and responsiveness of the client, so if you stay available and conduct reviews in a timely fashion, your project will fly by!
Will I get published?
Maybe! Past Book Clinic patients have been published and now enjoy careers as established authors. However, thanks to the internet, you can now self-publish your book and market it yourself while seeking a publishing deal. Many successful books, including Fifty Shades of Gray and the Eragon series, started as self-published books. The Book Clinic can also help you put together a book proposal so you can reach out to agents and publishers.
Do you offer ghostwriting services?
Not exactly. The Book Clinic asks to be credited as an editor on all projects, including ghostwriting projects. We also retain the right to divulge our involvement in your project (otherwise, it's very difficult to build any sort of credibility). However, you do not have to credit us as the author, and you maintain all rights to your work.
